The villages of Ohe en Laak and Stevensweert are situated on an "Island in the Meuse," approximately 5 kilometers long and 2.5 kilometers wide. This unique location has shaped the history of both villages. The fertile river clay attracted people from early on. It wasn't until 1882 that a permanent connection was established via a bridge over the Oude Maas.

Day beach De Maasterp 500m from the campsite
The approximately 15-hectare Dilkensplas is part of the lake. There's a designated area for inexperienced swimmers, no deeper than 1.4 meters. The day beach borders the Dilkensplas nature reserve.
The restaurant and sanitary facilities are built on top of the dike. This is due to flooding during the winter season.

Natural Monuments and its beauty.
Galloways and Konik horsesThe Dilkensplas near Laak in particular is characterised by rough bank erosion and deposits of sand and silt.
The vegetation consists of riparian forest, scrub, roughs and rich river valley vegetation.
Waterfowl are particularly common in winter. Since 1992, the 40-hectare area (20 hectares of which are water) has been grazed by Galloway and Konik horses, which help create a diverse natural environment instead of just woodland. The grazers were selected for their friendly nature, but they remain wild animals. Therefore, for your own safety, always maintain a 25-meter distance.
Fish pond: "the Teggerse Plas"
Opposite the Maashoeve, together with a number of other fishing ponds in Stevensweert, is owned by the angling association "De Snoek".
Natuurmonumenten, together with the VOF Natuurbedrijf "Eiland in de Maas," is the proud manager of the Molenplas, a beautiful natural lake created from the last large-scale traditional gravel extraction. Unique bird species such as the Common Tern and the Little Ringed Plover have already been sighted, and the Beaver has also been spotted. The entire area is open to walkers for exploring, and a birdwatching screen has been installed for bird enthusiasts.
🌳 Nature reserves on the "Island in the Maas".
A magnificent nature reserve has emerged around Stevensweert and Ohé en Laak. It's easily accessible via wide hiking trails. And those who prefer something a little more rugged and exciting can also roam the area. It's an area with a variety of activities, complete with rapids.
Nature reserve in Ohe en Laak - Limburg
With a viewpoint offering a breathtaking panorama. A bird island and rapidly developing trees, plants, and animal species. The Hompesche windmill and a stand of ancient trees are the area's two characteristic features. Just take a day trip to Stevol. It's truly worth it. You'll experience the atmosphere of the future Grensmaas nature reserve.
Meuse valley landscape
Characteristic of the island is the so-called "Meuse Valley landscape." This landscape is formed by floodplains located directly on the banks, with slightly higher fields behind them.
The floodplains are mostly used as pastureland. Along the edges of these fields lie small villages, which follow the river's course and are not always protected by a dike. Further inland, remnants of older river channels are still visible in the landscape.
The area has a completely open character.
In addition, the area is dominated by the high dike of the Juliana Canal. This canal was dug between 1925 and 1934 and visually cuts off a section of the Meuse valley from Maasbracht to Maastricht.
Finally, the gravel pits are characteristic of this area. After World War II, small-scale extraction of the gravel deposited by the river in the Meuse Valley during the various ice ages began. This industry gained full momentum in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Gravel was a raw material for concrete and asphalt. Thanks in part to the efforts of the local population, the gravel pits have been given a new purpose as recreational or nature reserves.
